Over 50 and Never Surfed? Take the Lesson.

Should women over 50 take a surf lesson if they’ve never tried it?

Abso-fu*^ing-lutely! We don’t need to have started at 12. We don’t need to look a certain way in a bathing suit. And we certainly don’t need to spend the lesson proving we’re good at something we’ve never done before.

We get to be beginners. Yay!

I didn’t start surfing until my mid-30s. I fell in love with surfing with the first wave I rode. Am I a shredding swan out there? Nope. Has it been humbling? Oh yeah. But the joy it has brought me has been worth the effort, the frustration, and the many, many times I’ve fallen off my board.

Because the joy, the joy! The ocean has become my sanctuary.

Surfing is a great educator. The waves have plenty to teach about life, especially when you stop trying to force everything to happen on your terms. You have to be present out there. Feel the rhythm of the water. Learn when to paddle, when to wait, and when to let a wave pass because another one is coming.

Some days, things come together. The glee from gliding on top of water with the earth’s energy is another level. Other days, you spend a lot of time getting back on your board. You learn to laugh, take a breath, and try again. That feels pretty familiar at this age.

It’s good to surprise ourselves. To discover something that brings us joy. To feel the little thrill of doing something we weren’t sure we could do. And Costa Rica is a beautiful place to give surfing a try. There are great instructors here (I can connect you) and the waves in certain spots are perfect for learning.

If you’ve been curious, take the lesson. At 50, 60, or beyond. How fun to do things for the sheer joy of finding out what they feel like and to once again feel the wonder and giddiness of a little kid.

Stay curious. Stay soft. Stay wild.
