How to Travel Safely in Costa Rica as a Solo Female Traveler
I am a huge believer that women should see the world — even when no one else is available to come along. Especially then!
But I also know that booking a flight to another country by yourself can feel like equal parts hell yeah and what on earth am I doing?
That is particularly true if it is your first solo trip. And even if you’ve traveled alone plenty of times, sometimes you don’t want to spend hours or days figuring everything out. You want to arrive, exhale, put your bag down, and know you’re okay.
That’s exactly the kind of experience I want to create for women coming to Costa Rica.
First things first: Is Costa Rica safe for solo female travelers?
Yes! Costa Rica is an incredible place to travel solo. BBC named Costa Rica one of the best countries for women traveling solo in 2026.
But just like anywhere in the world, being safe doesn’t mean being careless.
You don’t need to be afraid. You just need to be aware. The usual: keep an eye on your belongings, don’t leave your phone or bag unattended at the beach, be thoughtful about how much you drink when you’re out alone, don’t tell strangers exactly where you’re staying. Use the same instincts you would at home. And if something feels off, listen to that little voice. If something doesn’t feel right, trust yourself. You don’t owe anyone an explanation.
One of my favorite things about solo travel is actually how quickly your instincts sharpen. Your inner core gets strong. You feel each place a little deeper. You talk to people. You learn to navigate. And somewhere along the way you realize:
Oh. I can do this. That feeling is pretty freaking great!
Getting here without making it complicated
Soft Wild Stays is in Costa Rica’s beautiful Southern Zone, where the jungle tumbles toward the Pacific and life moves at a decidedly more human pace.
If you’re coming internationally, you’ll most likely fly into San José (SJO). From there, you can drive south or take a short domestic flight to Quepos and continue down the coast.
But you do not have to figure all of this out alone.
I’ll help you understand your options before you arrive — how to get here, what makes sense for your comfort level and budget, what to expect, and the little things that are much easier to know when you have a person on the ground.
Because you do. You have me!
Consider me your friend in Costa Rica
This is probably the biggest difference between booking a Soft Wild Stay and simply booking a random room somewhere. You’re not just getting a place to sleep.
I live here. I’ll be your guide, your local connection, your question-answerer, and the person you can turn to when you’re wondering, Okay, where should I go? Is this normal? Can I drive there? Where should I eat? You want to come? Where's the good beach? And what exactly am I supposed to do with this giant bug?
Think of me as your friend in Costa Rica who happens to have a beautiful place for you to stay.
You can have as much independence as you want without feeling like you’ve been dropped into a foreign country completely on your own.
That distinction matters to me.
Trust yourself & ask me
Part of the fun of traveling alone is figuring things out as you go. Explore, wander, talk to people, change your plans, follow your curiosity!
And remember, when you stay with me, you have someone here to ask (or hang out with). Wondering if you should drive somewhere alone? Which beach to explore? Where to go for dinner? Whether something is worth the trip? Ask me. I live here, and I’ll always tell you what I would — or wouldn’t — do myself.
This is for the first-timer and the woman who's done this before
Maybe you have always dreamed about traveling alone but haven't quite worked up the nerve.
Come. Seriously.
You don't have to suddenly transform into some fearless woman who backpacks across Central America with one pair of shoes and a toothbrush.
Start softer. Come somewhere you know there is a woman waiting for you on the other end.
And if you’re already an experienced solo traveler? You might want something different, too. Maybe you're perfectly capable of navigating Costa Rica by yourself — you just don't want to work that hard this time.
You want a safe, beautiful, soft place to land. I get that too.
A retreat experience without retreat prices
I love the idea of retreats. What I don't love is the idea that you should have to spend thousands of dollars to give yourself permission to escape your regular life for a little while.
Soft Wild Stays isn't a traditional retreat. There is no mandatory schedule. No forced bonding. No 6 a.m. anything unless you happen to love 6 a.m.
Instead, you get the parts I think matter most: a welcoming home, local connection, someone looking out for you, beautiful surroundings, adventure when you want it, rest when you need it, and the freedom to experience Costa Rica on your own terms.
Think retreat experience without retreat prices.
Come surf. See waterfalls. Watch whales. Sit by the pool. Explore the jungle. Eat ridiculously good food. Make new friends. Read an entire book. Do absolutely nothing for an afternoon.
There is no correct way to be here.
Open the cage
Solo travel has a funny way of reminding you who you are when nobody else is around telling you who you're supposed to be.
That's part of why I love it.
So if you've been dreaming about Costa Rica but you're nervous about coming alone, consider this your invitation.
And if you've traveled the world by yourself but you're craving someplace that feels a little more personal, a little softer, and a little less like another anonymous booking, this invitation is for you too.
Come stay with me in Costa Rica's Southern Zone.
I'll help you get here. I'll help you find your footing. I'll point you toward some magic.
Then the adventure is yours.
Stay curious. Stay soft. Stay wild.
